Lava Tubes to Lawn Hill Departs: 07 July 2013 Outback North Queensland is a land of rocky red ridges, abundant wetlands, lush gorges, rippling grasslands and country towns. Join a 16 day journey from Cairns to the Gulf of Carpentaria, south to Mt Isa and back to the coast. Local guides introduce the fascinating world of Undara Volcanic National Park as we explore the world's longest single vent lava flow. We then board the historic Gulflander (the "old tin hare") for the train ride from Croydon to Normanton. Further north is Karumba, the Gulf of Carpentaria's major fishing port. A sunset cruise on the Norman River is a chance to spot saltwater crocodiles and migratory birds among the mangroves. Boodjamulla National Park features Lawn Hill Gorge, palm-fringed waterholes and sheer sandstone walls. Canoe the waterways, swim in rock pools and walk to viewing points and Aboriginal rock art. Visit the laboratory at the Riversleigh Fossils Centre in Mt Isa and take an optional guided tour of one of the world's largest underground mines. At the John Flynn museum in Cloncurry, experience the history of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. In the small town of Richmond, we search for dinosaur fossils at the renowned marine fossil museum, Kronosaurus Korner. Your tour ends in Townsville.
Australia's Green Cauldron Departs: 12 July 2013 The essence of the rainbow region of Northern NSW is an eclectic mix of interesting walks, creative country towns and a relaxed ambience at every turn. This six day tour explores the national parks around Mt Warning while based in one place - a valley homestead near the town of Uki. Stretching along the western rim of the Tweed Caldera, the Border Ranges National Park is accessed via the Tweed Range Road and we enjoy a series of short walks near Brindle Creek. Nearby, the Tweed Pinnacle lookout gives you a bird’s eye view of the Tweed Caldera, a 23 million year old shield volcano. On the southern side of the caldera, the Nightcap Ranges are a walker’s paradise and part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage area. We walk sections of the Historic Nightcap Track which leads to hidden waterfalls, palm valleys, misty lookouts and lush rainforest. Part of the original trail was used by travellers and postal workers between the Richmond and Tweed in the late 1800s. Our last walk leads to a dramatic lookout over Minyon Falls. Our journey will include brief visits to the local villages of Uki, Nimbin and Mullumbimby.
Kalimantan, Sumatra & Flores Wildlife Safari Departs: 25 August 2013 Discover local wildlife, ecology, conservation and culture in this two week hands-on journey to Kalimantan,  Sumatra and Flores. Join renowned scientist Dr Claire Oelrichs to explore majestic rainforests, view orangutans in the wild, bathe Sumatran elephants and learn about one of the most bio-diverse places on earth. Beginning  with Tanjung Puting National Park in Kalimantan (west of the Wallace line and formerly known as Borneo), we visit a large tropical rainforest, home to orangutans, proboscis monkeys, macaques, langurs and gibbons. From our base at Rimba Orangutan EcoLodge we travel by klotok river boats to view primates and birds in the lowland forest. We continue to Way Kambas National Park on Southern Sumatra which has abundant wildlife and is known as the "Africa of Asia". Four nights are spent at Satwa Elephant Eco Lodge. Sumatran Elephants can be viewed in the wild with the chance to bathe baby Elephants at the nearby conservation centre. We track the Sumatran tiger in its own habitat (sightings are rare!) with the possiblity to also see tapir, sunbear, crocodile, gibbon, clouded leopard and more. To the east we travel to Flores Island, our base for three nights, from where we visit the islands of Komodo National Park which protect the impressive Komodo dragons, the largest lizard in the world. We enjoy crystal clear snorkelling over coral reef and colourful fish around Kanawa Island.
Southern Norway - Fjords, Glaciers & Folklore Departs: 30 August 2013 The oldest of Scandinavia's capitals, Oslo is the starting point of our Southern Norway tour. We journey north via Lillehammer for three nights and two full days walking in Norway's first national park, Rondane. Wild reindeer feed on the sparse vegetation shadowed by the high peaks and deep valleys of the Rondane massif. Nearby is Dovrefjell National Park, established to protect the mountain landscape and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Musk ox is the main attraction here and we have the chance to learn more about these unusual animals on our safari. We spend two days in the central mountains of Jotunheimen National Park walking to Norway's highest peak, Galdhøpiggen (2469m). Two nights in Ålesund give us time to rest and appreciate the beautiful Art Nouveau architecture of this town, which features turrets, spires and fairytale ornamentation. A highlight of this tour will be an overnight berth on the Coastal Steamer Hurtigruten through dramatic scenery and fjords, taking us to Bergen. Based here for three nights, there are opportunities to hike in the Bergen mountains or sightsee in the city. By ferry we transfer to Flåm far up the Aurlands fjord, surrounded by steep mountains, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys. Flåm is a nature-lover's paradise with a choice of hikes or fjord cruises. Travelling on a scenic train journey, our next stop is Finse, near Hardangervidda National Park. The park is the home of the largest herd of wild reindeer in Europe, as well as Arctic fox and Snowy owl. This tour of Norway's wild places concludes with the famous train journey from Bergensbanen to Oslo, where we spend our final night.
Goreme to Gallipoli Departs: 25 September 2013 Vibrant cities, volcanic landscapes, coastal coves, Roman ruins and historic battlefields are some of the wonders of central and western Turkey. Istanbul is the gateway to two continents where east meets west. Walk to an Ottoman fort, visit the renowned Hagia Sophia, cruise on the Bosphorus and explore massive Topkapi Palace. In central Anatolia, the Cappadocia region features curious volcanic landscapes, steadily carved by nature and its human inhabitants. Based here for four nights, we visit Goreme Open Air Museum and the underground cities. Day walks explore villages, canyons and lesser visited valleys. After visiting Konya, home of the whirling dervishes, we cross the Taurus Mountains to Antalya and stay three nights in the coastal town of Kas. Walk in Olympos National Park and enjoy a day on the Lycian way to the ancient city of Patara. A half day Gulet cruise to Kekova Islands allows time for swims, viewing the sunken city of Simena and visiting Myra the ancient capital of Lycia. In western Turkey, we explore the archaeological sites of Ephesus, Pergamon and Troy. Before returning to Istanbul, we walk from Anzac Cove to Lone Pine and visit the memorials and cemeteries on the Gallipoli Peninsula.
Old Inns & Autumn Leaves Departs: 25 September 2013 Each fall, the north east of the USA and Canada transforms into one of nature’s most unforgettable colour palettes. The autumn hues of red, orange and yellow attract “leaf-peepers” from around the world. With this backdrop we explore beautiful national parks, interesting cities and historic areas. Accommodation is a feature of this tour and includes the enchanting turrets of Mohonk Mountain House, overlooking a peaceful lake in the Catskill Mountains. We start our tour with a visit to Niagara Falls, followed by Quebec, with is citadel-like setting on a bluff overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Our search for Autumn colours takes us into Maine and Nahmakanta Lodge overlooking the lake of the same name. During our stay here, we can walk a section of the famous Appalachian Trail and we take part in an exclusive afternoon photography workshop with award winning nature photography Eddie Soloway. Our route then turns south to Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park and Cape Cod for some coastal and mountain strolls. We journey to Boston, the cradle of American independence and cultural mecca of New England’s largest city. Then head inland to the Berkshires before ending the tour at the amazing Mohonk Mountain House in the Catskills.
