The centre of the island features the volcanic ranges of Daisetsuzan National Park where day walks are accessed by cable car. Lakeside and forest walks at Shikaribetsu and Akan contrast with coastal walks at the Shiretoko peninsula and Kiritappu wetlands. Seasonal food, Japanese baths (onsen) and the autumn fire festival of the Ainu people are other highlights.
