Hiking Safety – What to Take in your First Aid Kit

Packing light is essential on any hike, but it’s essential to take a small First Aid Kit with you. Keep all first aid items in a soft waterproof pouch, and don’t take larger quantities than necessary i.e. there is no need to take a box of 48 ibuprofen tablets when you can take just one strip. Here is our recommended list for a day hike:

  • Band-Aids of varying sizes
  • Non-stick wound dressing & tape
  • Small pair of scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Safety pins
  • Antiseptic cream e.g. Betadine
  • Triangular bandage
  • Compression bandage (and 2 clips)
  • Saline solution
  • Sterile gloves
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Ibuprofen (for inflammation and pain relief)
  • Anti-histamine tablets (for bites and allergic reactions)
  • Whistle
  • Fire starter
  • Thermal accident blanket
  • Emergency contact card
