From the highest peaks to the deepest fjords, this 18 day journey explores the best of Southern Norway. After meeting in the oldest Scandinavian capital of Oslo, we travel north via Lillehammer to Norway’s first national park, Rondane. We have a total of five nights and four full days for walks on both the southern & northern side of the park. Wild reindeer feed on the sparse vegetation beneath the high peaks and deep valleys of the Rondane massif. Nearby is Dovrefjell Sunndalsfjella National Park, which protects a rich variety of flora and fauna including Musk ox. We have the chance to learn more about these unusual animals on a day safari. We spend two days in the central mountains of Jotunheimen National Park walking to Norway’s highest peak, Galdhoepiggen (2469m). In Alesund we take time to appreciate the beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, featuring turrets, spires and fairy-tale ornamentation. We then settle into our overnight berths on the Hurtigruten Coastal Steamer travelling through dramatic scenery and fjords to Bergen. Based here for two nights, there are opportunities to hike in the Bergen mountains or sightsee in the city. We transfer by ferry to Flam far up the Aurlandsfjord, surrounded by steep mountains, roaring waterfalls and deep valleys. Flam is a nature-lover’s paradise with a choice of hikes or fjord cruises. We then board the famous Bergensbanen train for the journey back to
Oslo, where we spend our final night.
